To preserve the
Vietnamese culture, SBVCC has a program for all children in the South
Bay area. This program is conducted in conjunction with Cong Doan Thanh
Phero at St. Catherine Laboure Church in Torrance. This program named
"Trung Tam Giao Ly va Viet Ngu" was created in 1990 and has been run by
volunteer teachers and staff.
The program includes classes for
Vietnamese language and culture studies. It is opened to all children in
the South Bay area. Currently there are 218 children with ages ranging
from 6 to 18 enrolled in the program. Classes and activities are held
every Saturday from 2:30 PM to 7:00 PM. If you would like to enroll your
children in the program, please contact us through email or telephone.
Every
year, we organize a special end of the year day called Ngay Hoi Que Me.
The children learn about the Vietnamese culture and cultural
differences in Northern, Central, and Southern regions. The children are
divided into groups to compete to demonstrate their skills in the
Vietnamese language and culture. Prizes are given to the winners at the
end of the contest.
At the moon festival (Tet Trung Thu),
children show their understanding of this special day through drawings
and poems. Lanterns and moon cakes are given to each child. Dragon dance
provides a special joyful feeling to every one. Parents and
grand-parents are also present at the festival to witness their
children's special moments and to remember their own celebration back in
the home country.
